Creating a Kitchen Pharmacy: The Benefits of Good Water

Creating a Kitchen Pharmacy: The Benefits of Good Water

We all know that water is foundational for our good health and survival — nothing can replace it.

However, these days it seems like everywhere you look headlines like this appear…

  • Fluoride and infants – Why parents are not being told about fluorosis
  • Most bottled waters are glorified tap water
  • Bottled Water is hazardous to you and our world

…and obtaining wholesome drinking water seems near impossible.

As we work to prepare our kitchen pharmacies this month, it’s important to understand that the water coming from our faucets — the water we need to make herbal teas, infusions, and baths — more than likely contains floride, chlorine, high levels of harmful bacteria, heavy metals, and tons of other unwanted contaminants.

Sometimes, it’s these very contaminants that give our drinking water a variety of unpleasant tastes and smells. Bottled water can even contain similar contaminants…not to mention it’s super expensive and wasteful.

A Solution

I wish we all had access to a pure water spring — wouldn’t that be awesome! But more than likely most of us are at the mercy of some sort of water service. What are we to do?

Creating a Kitchen Pharmacy: The Benefits of Good Water ~ And a Giveaway for You

My family has been blessed by a gift of the Berkey Light water system and I couldn’t be more thrilled. For a while now, I have been dreaming of owning a Berkey — because based on the research I think it’s the best available. All we used previously was a standard little water filter, and I just didn’t trust it’s ability to totally clean our water…nonetheless, it’s what we had.

Benefits of a Berkey

Creating a Kitchen Pharmacy: The Benefits of Good Water ~ And a Giveaway for You

  • Made in the U.S.A.
  • It holds 2.75 gallons.
  • The water tastes great…so clean!
  • No electricity is required in order for the filter to work.
  • It provides simple, reliable water purification right on the kitchen countertop!
  • Removes all the bad stuff and leaves some of the good minerals needed for good health.
  • The filters last to purify 6,000 gallons of water.
  • It’s super easy to transport. Being made of a safe and durable Lexan, the same material they use to make bullet proof glass, the Berkey is very light. Perfect when taken camping or used in an emergency situation.
  • It makes it easy for children to pour their own water, and all I can say is that we are drinking a lot more water!
  • For those of us on city water, this water filtration system is a great way to get rid of the toxins, chemicals, and dead bacteria found in the water; and those with well water will find it filters out excess minerals removing odors and poor taste.

Unfortunately the Berkey is a bit expensive upfront ($231). However, the long lasting filters and quality that it produces makes it a worthwhile investment. I figure it equals out to be about $0.50-$0.60 per gallon.

I was just doing research about Berkey yesterday. There are a few other of their products that I would like to purchase. This is a great way to try one and if we like it, we will get the others. My husband and I are planning to start a family and clean water is so important to us. Thanks so much for this opportunity!

Thanks for such a wonderful giveaway. We are currently using a small filter and I have been wanting something better.

What a great opportunity! We have been trying to figure out what the best solution would be for our less than stellar water.

Wow, this is awesome. Our family has been hit with a myriad of health problem of late and I am doing my very best to yank them to a healthier lifestyle which includes more water. This would be an amazing gift to win to help us all move towards the right path!!! Thanks for the opportunity!

A Berkey filter has been on my list forever. I have read nothing but great reviews of all their products. I like, too, that they have the fluoride filter to help remove those nasty bits from the water, too.

Getting rid of all the contaminents that are in our water. I have a small pitcher filter but I am not sure how well it works and it takes alot of time to get enough water.

    No electricity required!!

What excites you the most about owning a Berkey? Oh, to be able to ensure I was providing my family the best possible water would be terrific! Our water tastes delicious as it is. I’m very lucky to live where I live in Lawrence, Kansas. However, the added security of having the Berkey do its filtering miracle would be such a wonderful gift. Water is what my family drinks as our main beverage of choice! 🙂

  12. Lara

    May 10, 2012 at 4:20 AM

Clean water is so important. I would love to win this as I currently just use a standard store bought water filter. Thanks!

  13. Patti

    May 10, 2012 at 4:24 AM

We currently filter our water through our refrigerator. I filter our water for our dogs and chickens as well. I new a gentleman who was a scientist and believed his dog got cancer from their water, also a young man who died of cancer traced back to toxic well water. Scarey stuff. We currently have city water and at times, you can smell the chlorine when you run the water. A friend in the same town, has well water that tested for high amounts of radon. They put in an expensive reverse osmosis system, but I still won’t drink their water. I too would love to own a Berkey. It’s been on my wish list for a while.

  14. Lynne

    May 10, 2012 at 4:25 AM

I’d love the filter. While our water here is deemed to be of a high standard in purity etc…. I have learned, sadly, not to trust anything the big corporations state. I want to take as much personal responsibility as I can to ensure that my family ge the best they can on our limited resources. A filter like this would be way out of my league normally, but oh my, what an opportunity. Who could resist trying? Green blessings to all /I\

    May 10, 2012 at 4:28 AM

Clean water is so important. The more I read about nutrition the more I learn about the importance of drinking water, clean water. I just always trusted the tap, wrong.

  16. Carolyn @ The Mobile-Homemaker

    May 10, 2012 at 4:29 AM

We’ve been looking at these! Would be great to get one!

  17. tracy

    May 10, 2012 at 4:29 AM

We have another brand of filter system for the fridge but this one sounds like it would do a much better job. We thankfully have well water without all the stuff they put in the city water. But it would be nice to know all the harmful stuff is removed.

  18. Linda Douglas

    May 10, 2012 at 4:31 AM

We reviewed the 6 gallon Berkey on our blog. Everyone we’ve talked to says it’s great!

Ive been reading about Berkey’s on Bulk Herb Store. We now have our own well water on our farm. We have hard water. Do you recommend it for this? Love to win this!

  20. Dianna Brady

    May 10, 2012 at 4:32 AM

I would love to own a Berkley, and not have to make weekly trips to the grocery store for water! We are given a disclosure every month from our water department telling us the many things they are over the standard regulations on in our water supply. We don’t even drink our city water and haven’t for years.

  21. Wanda

    May 10, 2012 at 4:34 AM

The water here is so unpleasant. Large amounts of chlorine are used at the water treatment facility and the faint odor of bleach is always there. Right now I use a small pitcher filter, and a better alternative would be really wonderful.

  22. Amanda Ryals

    May 10, 2012 at 4:36 AM

I would love to know my water is completely safe and clean.

  23. Claire A.

    May 10, 2012 at 4:41 AM

I would love to have one of these! I hate the extra stuff in our water.

  24. shana

    May 10, 2012 at 4:45 AM

This is a great post! We already drink a lot of water each day either via the well or bottle (I know, I know). We would be super excited to win a Berkey – thank you for having this giveaway! 🙂

  25. Terrie

    May 10, 2012 at 4:54 AM

I have wanted one for so long. Thanks for all you do! My daughter and I go through a gallon or more a day, just drinking, so this would be a blessing!

  26. Candace Guidry

    May 10, 2012 at 4:54 AM

I had never heard of a Berkley and now I definitely want one! Our water is filled with so much chlorine that it smells like bleach coming out of the faucet. Couple that with regular “boil” orders because of breaches in the system and a Berkley may be the answer we’ve been looking for.

  27. Adrienne @ Whole New Mom

    May 10, 2012 at 4:59 AM

The portability and having a great filtration system to remove most contaminants.

  28. Lisa

    May 10, 2012 at 5:01 AM

Although we are blessed to have pure, delicious well water, and really aren’t in need of a water filtering system, I would love to win this so that I could gift it to my son and daughter-in-law who are looking forward to starting a family. Fresh, clean water — wouldn’t that be a fabulous gift? Thanks so much for the opportunity! ~Lisa

I’ve been wanting one of these forever! OK, not *forever* but since I first heard of them, for sure.

I love the idea of having clean, fresh water readily available for my kids whenever they want it. xo

  33. Crystal F.

    May 10, 2012 at 5:09 AM

A Berkey is at the top of my “need” list. Our water is terrible. 🙁

  34. Sarah @ Nature's Nurture

    May 10, 2012 at 5:10 AM

Wow, I’ve been wanting one of these since I first heard about them about 4 years ago! I would love to be able to easily and safely filter out the nasties like fluoride and chlorine. And I love that it uses no electricity!

  35. Lauren E

    May 10, 2012 at 5:11 AM

oh, and I wonder, you wouldnt have to worry about chlorine in the water with this, correct? we dont have flouride in our water, thankfully, but we do have chlorine. Right now, I have to leave a pitcher of water on my counter to evaporate it all out.

  36. Susanne

    May 10, 2012 at 5:20 AM

As we continue to tweak our home and habits, I’ve been wanting to filter our water. Using less energy is one of our goals, so I love that the Berkey doesn’t use electricity.

  37. Carole RB

    May 10, 2012 at 5:22 AM

What excites me more? Having pure water to drink, I can’t drink the tap water in my house! Thanks a bunch for the opportunity to win one!

Love that this needs no electricity and is portable!

  41. Shannon

    May 10, 2012 at 5:31 AM

So funny! My husband just found this filtration system a few months ago for us. We haven’t purchased it yet but we need something better than our britta and it balances out compared to filter changes.

  42. Stephanie

    May 10, 2012 at 5:32 AM

I sooooo want this. Thanks for offering!

  43. Sheri Graham

    May 10, 2012 at 5:36 AM

What excites me the most is knowing that my family will be drinking GOOD water! We have an under the sink filter that I’m sure makes our water a little better, but the Berkley will be SO much better. I love that it is not huge and is portable. Love it! Thanks for doing the giveaway!

  44. K M Duff

  46. Colleen

    May 10, 2012 at 5:39 AM

This is amazing!! I have well water so I’m not too concerned about Fluoride in my water but I am concerned about what else is lurking in it!!

  47. Sandra

    May 10, 2012 at 5:45 AM

This would be so wonderful to win! To know that my family is drinking safer water would put my mind at ease. 🙂

  48. Lauren

    May 10, 2012 at 5:48 AM

I am so excited about this giveaway! My husband is in school for environmental science and he has showed me so many acticles of the toxins and metals in our public water system. Think about all the prescription drugs that are washed down the drain or crushed down the toilet!!

Can’t wait to see who wins!! Good luck to all:)

  49. Janie

    May 10, 2012 at 5:57 AM

We have been looking at the Berkley and planning for one. Winning one would be the greatest!

  50. Ronnie Condron

    May 10, 2012 at 6:03 AM

We used filtered water alot. I like the idea that this is a non electric filter!

  51. Heather

    May 10, 2012 at 6:06 AM

I think having really good water so readily available would do wonders to up my family’s water intake! 🙂

  52. Andrew Cooper

    May 10, 2012 at 6:07 AM

I had never heard of the Berkey Light Water System until now. It sounds like a great product and could provide my family and I the opportunity for better tasting and safer water. Thank you for providing one to giveaway.

  53. Jen

    May 10, 2012 at 6:08 AM

I have been really thinking about getting a Berkey – especially after reading how much Atrazine and other nasty pollutants are in the water here where I live. That is crazy scarey! It is great to know that there is something out there that could help the water in my area. Thanks for the post!

  54. Heather T

    May 10, 2012 at 6:08 AM

This is the first time i’ve heard of this system and it sounds fantastic! What an awesome way to stop spending money on the Culligan guy delivering me 5 gallon jugs of water at a time!

  55. Susan

    May 10, 2012 at 6:13 AM

I would really love this, been buying bottled mineral water since I have crappy tap city water and would love a better way

  56. Melissa

    May 10, 2012 at 6:19 AM

The quality of our water is very poor, this would be a wonderful addition to our kitchen!

  57. Holly R

    May 10, 2012 at 6:20 AM

I would love to own a Berkey and know that I am safe drinking water that isn’t going to make me sick!

  58. Christina A

    May 10, 2012 at 6:21 AM

I’ve always been concerned about chemicals and flouride in our water. The flouride in our city water gives me flourosis issues and we just lug 5 gallons bottles from the grocery. The Berkey would be soooo much more convenient and it is a real need for our family!

  59. Emmy

    May 10, 2012 at 6:22 AM

This looks like an awesome system! Maybe it would make me drink more water like I already should be doing!

  60. Monna

    May 10, 2012 at 6:22 AM

We were just researching these this week! Much more cost effective and clean than bottled water. Great giveaway – thanks!

  61. Keli Martin

    May 10, 2012 at 6:23 AM

I’ve been wanting one of these for about 6 months now! *fingers crossed*

  62. Ca

    May 10, 2012 at 6:24 AM

This is a wonderful give a way!!! We currently take our gallon jugs to a carbon filtered ( and a few other filters) pay by the gallon spot each week. It would be amazing not to heft those each week.
    Thanks for this offer.

  63. Deanne C.

    May 10, 2012 at 6:24 AM

WOW! I’ve been looking these past few months to try and find a new water filtration system (not being confident in my small refrigerator version, either!) and VOILA! Here is my favorite blogger sharing her wisdom with us once again!! Thank you, Andrea!! To actually have the chance to WIN ONE…well, that’s just a big ol’ bonus! 🙂

  64. Jenni Rusow

I would love to get rid of the water filter in my ‘fridge and under the counter! This filter sounds quit superior to the ones we are using now!

  66. Elizabeth

    May 10, 2012 at 6:26 AM

Oh this is fabulous! I have had my eye on a Berkey for a while. I know the chemicals and fluoride in in our water isn’t good for us and would love to be able to remove it. Thanks for the chance!

  67. Solina

    May 10, 2012 at 6:26 AM

Thanks for the chance to win!

  68. April

we just use a small filter pitcher, that has to refilled a dozen times a day!

  69. Cristina @ An Organic Wife

    May 10, 2012 at 6:27 AM

I’d love to be able to go flouride-free. I actually didn’t know it was possible without a reverse osmosis system.

  70. Elesha

    May 10, 2012 at 6:27 AM

My husband and I would really enjoy having clean water! We just moved into the city and have been disappointed with the taste of the water. We use a small filter but it doesn’t seem to get the job done and I wonder what is actually in the water.

  71. Ann Moore

This sounds like just the ticket. Water is so precious.

  72. Heidi Jameson

    May 10, 2012 at 6:28 AM

Our family has been working so hard towards becoming sustainable! Planting fruit trees, sugarcane and vegetables in our South Florida yard (including walking stick cabbages that last all year!). We’ve been struggling with how to reclaim all the water we get in the rainy season. Winning a Berkley would mean we could drink the rainwater we collect!

  73. Maricela

    May 10, 2012 at 6:29 AM

With a beautiful, growing 20-month-old water filtration is so important. I wish we could afford a good filter to protect our son. Giving his little body the best start possible is my goal.

  74. Ali

    May 10, 2012 at 6:29 AM

I have been reading about these filters for a long time, I would LOVE to have one! I absolutely love that they are made in the USA and of course the clean water is wonderful. We have very sulfer-y, rusty well water and filter it to drink it. This would be amazing!

  75. Lynette Cruz

    May 10, 2012 at 6:29 AM

I would love to own this,The benefits of drinking water without all of the questionable cooties would be nice!lol…

  82. Heather R

    May 10, 2012 at 6:32 AM

Our water district uses RECYCLED water. I’m sorry, but I don’t want to drink that, it smells! Buying bottled water has gotten more and more expensive and britta filters only do so much and do not filter fast enough to accommodate a family’s needs.

  83. Tiffany

    May 10, 2012 at 6:32 AM

I first learned about the Berkey system about two years and have wanted one but realized that the cost was a bit prohibitive. I should just bite the bullet and get one. We currently purchase water for drinking at $2 for each large bottle. That’s roughly 2 bottles a week, so you do the math. Would LOVE to win this!

  84. Jessica

    May 10, 2012 at 6:33 AM

Looks like a great water filter. Just wondering what the ph level is of the water after it’s filtered.

  85. Sulena Zollman

    May 10, 2012 at 6:34 AM

I love the idea of Berkey system and would love to have a Berkey Light! I love that it filters out all the crud in city water supplies!

  86. Stace @ SavingStace.com

    May 10, 2012 at 6:34 AM

Right now we rent a cooler system and I would LOVE to have a system of our own. We go through tons of water ! Thanks so much for the giveaway.

  87. Carolyn

    May 10, 2012 at 6:34 AM

We’ve looked at the Berkey a lot and thought about getting one. Our current home has really good well water from a deep well, but soon we are moving out of state to a new home where the water quality is a lot more sketchy- so the Berkey has gotten a major bump up the list of things to get! =)

  88. carol mattaliano

    May 10, 2012 at 6:35 AM

I would love one of these after learning what is in our city water supply!!

  89. Kim

    May 10, 2012 at 6:40 AM

We live on a well system, and have had one contamination before- I do NOT want to repeat that experience!

  90. Mandy Anderson

I would love to win this!

  91. Beth Steinbach

    May 10, 2012 at 6:43 AM

I would love to give really clean drinking water to my family of 6. What a blessing that wouldbe.

  92. Skye

    May 10, 2012 at 6:45 AM

I only drink water. Our city water is becoming awful to drink. I have 3 little girls and I do not want them exposed to all the contaminants in the water.

  93. Tammy Apitzsch

    May 10, 2012 at 6:47 AM

We have well water…it doesn’t taste great, so I don’t drink as much water as I should…but the bottled water alternative is unappealing because of the almost certain fluoride content. I *need* a Berkey!

  94. JOI

    May 10, 2012 at 6:47 AM

I’ve been looking for a really good filtration system for my family. Everything seems so cheap and crappy. I just want a healthy family. Geez. Is that too much to ask?

We are all trying to keep harmful pesticides and hormones out of our families bodies, but sometimes we forget about the harm found in drinking water. This would be great!

    May 10, 2012 at 6:50 AM

Clean water is something that is very important to our family! I have been looking for something we could have at home instead of having to run all of the time to the store! As our family will soon reach the size of 7 (baby #5 is due in 6 weeks – children ages 6 and under) it is difficult to always get to the store. I just HATE having to use water from the sink. What a blessing it would be to have a water system at home! 🙂

I would SO love to have this berkey!! We tried R/O–found that was unsafe. Tap water is bad. Bottled water is bad. We get concerned about other countries not having healthy drinking water–but ours is only a step up because it may be cleaner, but the chemicals are so bad!

Definitely awesome. My girlfriend tells me I’m crazy when I talk about the different tastes in tap water, but with one of these I’m sure she’ll see it too. If I don’t win it, I’ll buy it, guaranteed! 🙂

I recently moved to the country where the water system is horrible. I’ve been shopping for a filter, but have had to purchase water through my local whole foods coop in the meantime. This is expensive and labor intensive. I had never heard of a Berkey before today. It sounds like exactly what I need!

I have heard the berkeys are amazing! They even filter out arsenic in the water, which if you ever read the reports about your city water you know you are digesting aresenic. I know that the taste from a Berkey is clean! That excites me. I know many people who own it here in S Colorado because it takes out the sulphur which is what I am looking forward to the most.

Wouldn’t the cost per gallon be much lower than $0.50-$0.60 per gallon? The article states that one filter is good for 3,000 gallons. I’m assuming the purchase price of $231.00 includes a filter? If so the price per gallon would be less than $.04/gallon and that’s just for the initial purchase. The cost would obviously be less when you were just replacing filters. $0.50-$0.60 per gallon would mean the initial investment would be over $1,500.00. Please correct me if I’m wrong but if not I just wanted to be sure everyone knew this is well worth the investment. As a family of 9 who is currently lugging around and refilling 5 gallon jugs from Culligan water kiosks at local stores for $0.29/gallon almost daily I am certainly aware of its worth. We’ll be getting one soon one way or another. 🙂

We have been using a closed Berkey filter for YEARS (bought 1999 – for Y2K). It has been wonderful!!! We use it when travelling (hotel water is ALWAYS chlorinated) – and we can even use it for the ice cubes (making ice cold filtered water.) It takes out all the chlorine taste/smell. Would love to win one for one of my adult children! They would be thankful to have it. Thanks for giving the opportunity.

Like so many others posting here, I read about the Berkley a while ago and put it on my “Wish List”. I live in rural Washington and have had crummy water since we put in the well 25 years ago. It smells, is cloudy with clay, and is about as hard as water can get. Winning a Berkley would make it so I didn’t have to haul water from work (which is only slightly better than home!) P.S. I love your blog and pin almost everything!

  182. Kathleen

Our city water is supposed to be safe (according to the letter that the water company sends us every year), but it doesn’t taste too good straight out of the tap. I love the idea of a water filter system that doesn’t use electricity (I’m on a mission to reduce my electric bill) like the one on our fridge does. I’ve heard that Berkey’s are the best!

I was just worrying about my tap water this morning. I use a filter pitcher and has not been up to standards lately! We drink a LOT of water. We use our stainless steel water bottles ALL the time and I worry that as I tell my kids to drink lots of water (especially in the hot weather) I am making them sick. We have pretty decently tasting water here, but taste has nothing to do with rally GOOD water. I would LOVE one of these but the cost is a major holdback. Winning would be AWESOME!

    May 10, 2012 at 9:46 AM

I have been thinking alot about the whole water thing. I used to have a water cooler system but luggin the 5 gallon jugs to have them filled was hard! The Berkley sounds great!

We talk about getting something for our water and just haven’t yet. It would be so nice to win this filter.

  215. Angela DeRossett

    May 10, 2012 at 10:11 AM

I would love to own one of these systems. Our water sometimes becomes very cloudy and smells which leaves me worried that in the times that it’s not like this that there must be *something* in there even if it looks and smells clean. We use bottled water when the change occurs but having a system like this would also allow us to save money and give us peace of mind.

  216. Kate N.

    May 10, 2012 at 10:17 AM

The thing I would love about this is being sure our water is free of chlorine! Thank you so much for the opportunity!

I had no idea my Brita wasn’t doing the job! The most exciting thing would be providing my baby with worry-free water. He’s not drinking water yet but I use it to make his baby food, mommy the cow drinks it, and he will too once he starts using a cup {we don’t do commercial juices}. I want one!!

  220. Rachael

    May 10, 2012 at 10:38 AM

What an amazing giveaway. Thank you! I can tell the filtration system from my refrigerator doesn’t work very well. This would be a great gift.

    May 10, 2012 at 10:39 AM

One can never go wrong owning a good water filter. In a worst case scenario even lake water can be made safe to drink by passing through the filters that Berkey uses! Personally, I do not think the up front cost is high at all… almost everyone I know buys bottled water on at least a semi regular basis. If you can afford to buy bottled water you can afford to buy a Berkey! When you consider the cost to the environment it is astounding. Our family re-uses glass kombucha bottles (mostly GTs), or mason jars for our water bottles.

  222. Jennifer J.

    May 10, 2012 at 10:39 AM

What a nice unit! I didn’t know about these until I read this through a link from a friend, but I’m so glad I did. I’m going to be reading much more on this blog…and about the Berkeys. Very intriguing!

I would love a Berkey because despite “reassuring” blurbs from the water company about how great our water is, when you actually look at the fine print (i.e. the measurements taken), it doesn’t look that good!

  229. Amy P

    May 10, 2012 at 10:48 AM

Oh my goodness, I would love to have a Berkey filter. Our well water is so rusty and sulfurous, it really doesn’t quench thirst at all and doesn’t make one want to drink their daily optimal amount of water. I’ve been eyeing up the Berkey for awhile now but just haven’t been able to spring for one on our single income budget. Thanks so much for the chance to win one. 🙂

  230. Mickie

    May 10, 2012 at 11:54 AM

We;ve heard lots of great reports about the Berkey and know that the 11 people in our family would be happy to keep that water flowing…lots of water being drunk up over here. Never can trust what comes out of the faucet…we’d drink easy w/ a Berkey.

  260. Nathan

    May 10, 2012 at 11:56 AM

The thing I like best about a Berkey is the incredibly low price per gallon of filtered water. It’s one of the best financial investments you’ll ever make, to say nothing of the dividends it pays in the health realm!

  261. Melanie Yardley

    May 10, 2012 at 11:57 AM

Great article and giveaway!! I care about what my family puts in their mouths and on their skin. We have the Berkey show filter since our tap water reeks of chlorine. The Berkey Light would be a great addition to our household to help us keep a healthy lifestyle.

Two things excite us: one is getting the flouride out of the water. The other is that the area we live in is known to be one of the highest in the country for kidney stones. I am positive that filtering the water will help with that!

  267. Tracie

    May 10, 2012 at 12:03 PM

  275. Lanette

    May 10, 2012 at 12:13 PM

I was so mad when I found out my fridge didn’t filter out Flouride… If Flouride causes cancer in lab rats why is it in our toothpaste, our mouthwash, and our drinking water?? I have been looking for a solution to this problem because I drink A TON of water. So glad I saw this. Pick my name!! 🙂

  291. Lisa Pfeifer

    May 10, 2012 at 12:34 PM

Shoshanna, I did the same research to find the best water for my family, and Berkey was my conclusion as well. And when I ordered the Berkey, I also got to choose the fluoride/arsenic filters for free, so all in all it was the BEST investment! This year for mother’s day my hubby bought me a new spigot that shows the water level inside the tank for our Berkey. Would love to win the Berkey Light for travel and trips or to gift one of my friends with!

  292. Bethany B.

    May 10, 2012 at 12:35 PM

OOH, I have had one of these on my wish list for a while now, but our budget just hasn’t allowed it. I would love to have nice clean water without all the extra stuff in it for my family!!

  293. Carolynne Ford

    May 10, 2012 at 12:35 PM

I have been saving up so we can get a Berkey for our home filtration system. This would be so wonderful in our home!!

  294. Cathy

    May 10, 2012 at 12:36 PM

We’ve had our Berkey Light for about 5-6 years now and love it. I was curious about the cost numbers, though. If you were to buy the Berkey at $231 and 6 fluoride/arsenic filters at $61 each (those only last for 1000 gallons), that comes to $597…divide that by 6000 gallons and I get just under 10 cents per gallon. Maybe you’re factoring in something else, though.

Also was wondering if others have the fluoride/arsenic filters? We added them last year and have never gotten them to work well, despite trouble shooting on the Berkey site. They make the filter extremely slow, to the point where we took them back out. We would LOVE to use these if we could figure out how to make them work properly. Thanks for any help if anyone else has had this problem.

  295. Paige

I NEED something that will filter the fluoride out of my water! I grew up with non-fluoridated well water and never had a cavity, thyroid problems, or skin problems…until I moved to a house with fluoridated city water when I was 33! Now I’m a mess! I also have a 2 year old and I don’t want him to suffer the effects of fluoride poisoning like I am! I’ve gotten my first cavity, have thyroid issues (having trouble getting pregnant too) and my face is a mess! Help!

So glad I found your blog! We go through so much water at my house as it’s really one of hte only things we drink. This has been on my wish list for sometime. I think this is going to be added to the birthday list this year 🙂

    May 10, 2012 at 1:31 PM

I would love to be able to offer this to my family! We currently have a filter, but it pales in comparison! Thank you so much for this opportunity!!

  324. Kristen Sosebee

    May 10, 2012 at 1:34 PM

We began using a Brita filter after moving to the city for my husband to attend law school, and thought that was sufficient. But then I began reading Cancer Think Outside the Box from the Bulk Herb Store and read how horrible fluoride and other things are that are added all the time to city water. I grew up on well water, so I had no idea! Definitely would love to have something that removes all the toxins from the water I give my husband and little boy, but the price has always been a bit of a hindrance.

I, like you, have often thought it would be great to own one of these filtering systems. On a school teacher’s salary we have to mind where all our money goes so it’s not been in the budget. This would truly be a blessing. Thanks for the great giveaway.

My in-laws have the Big Berkey and we’d love to have one too! The water tastes great!

  332. Johnna

    May 10, 2012 at 1:50 PM

We have wanted one of these for years now. Then my husband lost his job and we couldn’t afford it. We are slowly trying to save up for one. We have been using a water distiller for years but we love that the Berkey does even better than the distiller AND it leaves the important minerals in the water.

  333. Ashley

    May 10, 2012 at 1:52 PM

I would LOVE to own one of these, I have a family full of young children and this would be ideal to have an option for healthy water, right now where we’re renting the water smells of sulfur and has “bits” of rock or something in it and we’ve cheap water filters to help with the taste but the filters never last for very long.

Thanks for all your great information, finding something made in the USA (which is so important), and for even giving away this wonderful product to someone.

    Cheers,
    Ashley

  344. Mary Ann

    May 10, 2012 at 2:21 PM

I’ve wanted a Berkey ever since I read about it at the Bulk Herb Store, like a year ago. Our city water is so full of chlorine you can smell it when you turn the tap on, and Britta filters just don’t cut it. I have actually used two Britta pitchers and filtered the water from one through the other before drinking it. Sure would be nice not to have to do that.

  345. Janessa

    May 10, 2012 at 2:24 PM

Our water is so chlorinated that guests who don’t live in our town gag on it. Or it smells like a pool. I think it would be lovely to offer truly clear water!

We just received a letter from our city regarding our city water. It contains cancer causing agents (can not remember of the exact name of them off hand) and has for 30+ years!! But the citizens are just now being informed about it! Nice of them to finally tell us!! Hmmmmmm, maybe this has something to do with our county having the highest cancer rate in our state!! Grrrrrrrrrr!!!! Would love love love to win one!!!

    May 10, 2012 at 7:17 PM

Thank you for hosting this giveaway! I’ve been “coveting” the Berkey line for some time now. We use a little Brita but I know the Berkey would filter out much more. We have very hard, very heavily chlorinated water because we live on an island. We know we’ll be moving this fall and two of the places on the list have very hard water as well, one with a very bad sulfur smell to the area’s water. What a blessing it would be to have a Berkey on the counter instead of dealing with what would still be left in our Brita!

  395. Laura G.

    May 10, 2012 at 7:37 PM

We have well water, but with so many farms around us, I would love to have a berkey to filter it just in case.

  399. Sara Carlson

    May 10, 2012 at 8:00 PM

  400. Kendra

    May 10, 2012 at 8:03 PM

What excites me the most about the possibility of owning a Berkey filter is the peace of mind that would come from knowing my family is not drinking water that is unhealthy for them.

  401. Kathy

    May 10, 2012 at 8:12 PM

We live in a semi-rural area, and although we have a water system we are hooked-up to, they put HUGE amounts of chlorine in the water. It smells like pool water coming out of the tap. I would love one of these so we could feel safer drinking our own tap water. Thanks so much for doing this giveaway! 🙂

  402. Veronica

    May 10, 2012 at 8:20 PM

We’re moving to a new house, and leaving our RO filter behind. We’ve been wondering about the best option for filtering water at our new house, and I think this may be it!

  403. Leann

    May 10, 2012 at 8:24 PM

We run through filters in our Brita like crazy…. I would love to have this available for my family to be assured that they are getting the safest drinking water around and without having to change those dang filters so often like we are now.

  404. Amy

    May 10, 2012 at 8:28 PM

We currently have a filter on our faucet, for our well water. It would be great to win one!

    May 10, 2012 at 8:51 PM

I would love to enter this. I have been drooling for sometime over a Berkey. However, I can’t get the linky to work right (?) == it always asks to sign up to make one and then goes no further. Am I missing something simple here?

  410. shell

    May 10, 2012 at 9:07 PM

We drink a lot of water in my family and this Berkey water system would be so nice to have nice and clean fresh water.

    Not buying bottled water!!!!!

  413. Jennifer Smith

    May 10, 2012 at 9:51 PM

Not having to buy bottled, less trash since we won’t have to throw away plastic bottles, and cleaner water for my family means we stay healthier!

  414. Judi Kelly

    May 10, 2012 at 10:43 PM

I have used the faucet filter, and the container with the filter. The faucet filter was a pain to change, and the container filter left little black specks of the charcoal. Just seemed……to simple to be healthy. Back to bottles water (where DOES it come from?) and plastic to deal with. This system seems to be safer and eco-friendly.

  415. Ang

    May 10, 2012 at 10:58 PM

I have Brita water bottles, and love them, but my kids don’t get to use them when I have them with me and they aren’t as well, so this would be AWESOME.

  416. Marcella F

    May 11, 2012 at 2:13 AM

I really like that fact that the system doesn’t use electricity to filter the water. Not only does it save money from buying bottled water, but it saves money on electricity, too.

  417. Leona C

    May 11, 2012 at 2:31 AM

I try not to think about the water I am drinking since I don’t have the money yet to own a really good filter system like Berkey.

Once I do, I’ll be so happy to drink fresh delicious water 🙂 I think my betta fish General Hemingway would also enjoy to live in fresh chemical-free water too!

We live in Michigan now and fortunately live by a place that sells spring water for 50 cents a gallon. But we are planning on moving to Virginia soon, and all I keep reading about it their newspapers is how bad the water is there. I know that when we move there I need to invest in a clean water system, so I have been looking for something like this! Thanks for the chance to comment 🙂

  419. Heather L

    May 11, 2012 at 4:20 AM

    May 11, 2012 at 6:14 AM

    Berkey’s are great!
Without one, my son gets stomach cramps from the water. We take ours on vacation: it’s wonderful that they’re portable. I’ve had mine for about 3 or 4 years. The distributor from whom we bought replaced our filters free, even though I felt it was our own fault the filters separated from their base when the entire canister fell over in our car while driving around a corner.
If I win one I’d give it to one of my sisters, both of whom have it on their “wish list.” Thanks for the opportunity and the great website.

We have well water and have farmland that borders our property. I don’t even want to know what kind of goodies are lurking around at the bottom of our well! Clean water I can truly trust to be clean would be great!

    May 11, 2012 at 7:24 AM

I have been looking at the Berkey water filters for awhile. I like the idea of having clean water for herbal teas and infusions.

    May 11, 2012 at 7:33 AM

Would love to win this Berkey system! Our well water has “changed” and I really don’t care for the reverse osmosis setup… Currently using bottled and distilled. Need help!! Thanks for this timely info for a wonderful product!

I have friends who love theirs.

    May 11, 2012 at 7:57 AM

This would be awesome to win. I’m currently using a Brita water pitcher, and while I’m sure it’s better than nothing, the filter isn’t catching everything. Thanks for this opportunity!

  434. Maggie

    May 11, 2012 at 7:58 AM

I love the Bulk Herb Store. I wish there was a local store in my area so I could just spend hours browsing. I had never heard of the Berkey system but I want one!

  435. Alex

    May 11, 2012 at 7:59 AM

My partner and I use a Brita filter we acquired for free, since we’re broke college students. I think this is definitely an upgrade we need.

    May 11, 2012 at 7:59 AM

I would love to win this! We use a small Zero Water filter, but it is very slow and only purifies a small amount of water at a time. Thanks for the chance to improve our drinking water!

  437. Amanda

The ease of use, purity and reuse ability!

    May 11, 2012 at 8:01 AM

Would love to win this system! I do not like the taste of tap water and do not trust bottled water. I am using a pur filter system right now and know it doesn’t get everything that it needs to be taken out of the water but figured it helps. I know the things they are adding to our water are not good for us and is causing alot of the medical problems my husband is having along with the medical problems everyone else in the world is having. We have a well but is unsafe to drink this would be perfect to have not only for the tap water to be filtered through but for the well water in time of emergency! I really want to win!

  439. Crystal Lail

    May 11, 2012 at 8:01 AM

Our city tap water is the nastiest stuff I’ve ever tasted, I hate to think about what is in it that makes it so horrible. We would love to win this!

  440. Rachel

    May 11, 2012 at 8:02 AM

My county decided to fluoridate the water, and my last two childrens teeth have suffered, and I am sure this is why. I”ve heard of collecting rain water, and looked for filter’s but unsure if these otc filters will filter out the flouride. I need to tackle this water issue to provide good health for my family.

  443. Nichole

    May 11, 2012 at 8:03 AM

I would love to win! We can walk a couple blocks to a co-op and get great filtered water for $0.37/gallon so we haven’t gotten our own system yet, but it would save us some money & lots of time if I got one of these for free 😉

  444. mona davis

It would best benefit our family to assure safe drinking water.

    May 11, 2012 at 8:04 AM

My husband and I have looked at this system, but with a new baby on the way hopefully closing on a house soon its just not in the budget. Our water is so hard and yucky I would love to have one of these to help us in our journey to go off grid!

  446. Jozette

    May 11, 2012 at 8:07 AM

This is a super fluoride filtered water and I want all of my family using it!

  447. Lydia

  448. Joan Laufnick

    May 11, 2012 at 8:12 AM

I’d love to try this for my family. New Jersey just passed a law requiring all the water in the state be fluoridated! YUCK!!!

  449. Jennifer Cummings

    May 11, 2012 at 8:14 AM

Our water smells like sulfur and tastes awful. We have tried several water filtration systems over the years. I have seen the Berkey but the price has deterred me. I guess if you add up the price of all the bottled water over the years it wouldn’t seem like much. I would love to win one and get to enjoy fresh water w/o tons of plastic bottles waiting to be recycled. Thanks for offering the generous giveaway.

  450. Stephanie

    May 11, 2012 at 8:14 AM

I’d love to win this for my dear friends. I already have a Berkey, and we love it. I’d buy one for everyone if I could. I can’t… so hoping to win this for my friends who haul filtered water home from the co-op each week and are raising two healthy, organic, attached young kids. Good luck to us!

    May 11, 2012 at 8:37 AM

This is such a wonderful item. My DH has one at his work and raves about it. I have a thyroid condition and have to watch what I eat and drink. Something like this would really help out. Thank you!

  460. Christine Carlson

    May 11, 2012 at 8:38 AM

I do already own a Berkey and unfortunately have had many issues with it which has been disappointing. Still, I did do my research and believe that it is one of the best. I also use the fluoride filters which increase the benefits.

I typically don’t drink water for a number of reasons ……… trace pharmecutical drugs, don’t like the taste, don’t like plastic and many other reasons. I know it is good for me but so hard to do. I think possibly owning this system would increase my ability to drink water. MAY BE.

  476. Evelyn

I have been on field trips to our water treatment facility…worst field trips ever! 479. Melissa

    May 11, 2012 at 10:04 AM

I have city water, and every year I get a little “report card” of the water quality. It lists all the things in the water, most of which are things I do not want to put in my body. But the report card tells me that “It’s okay, the traces are so minute that it poses no health risk.” I’m sorry, I don’t care what “minute” or “allowable” quantities they are. I don’t want them in my water, period!

  480. Alyssa B.

    May 11, 2012 at 10:21 AM

We’ve been working towards healthier food and a healthier house…this would be a great addition, since I haven’t gotten to the water yet (we use reverse osmosis, but it’s a pain to go buy it)!

  481. Rebekah

    May 11, 2012 at 10:41 AM

I would LOVE to own a Berkey! We have been looking at buying one and well winning one would make it sooooooo much better! We are like everyone working our way to a healthier lifestyle! Thanks for the opportunity to *maybe* win one! 🙂

  483. Stacy Corder

    May 11, 2012 at 10:56 AM

We get hurricanes and the water system can be contaminated, so a Berkey Water filter would be a godsend. I’d love to see how well it works and whether I could replace my sinktop filter with one.

  484. KP

    May 11, 2012 at 11:04 AM

This would be awesomely convenient to have!

  485. Kelly

    May 11, 2012 at 11:32 AM

While I know that I *should* drink water, I have yet to find a filter that I am happy with and is affordable so I can drink water without the added taste from the extras. I have wanted a Berkey for a while, but with a large family it hasn’t been practical thus far. 🙁 Hoping I win one!

  486. Linda @ Linda's Lunacy

    May 11, 2012 at 11:37 AM

We have city water, so I would very much like having some fresh, clean water from a Berkey. We have a store bought pitcher filter, and it seems like we have to fill it up every 5 mintues. Having almost 3 gallons of filtered water sitting on the counter would also be such a time saver for our family. And we would save money on buying the filters!

  487. Vanessa

    May 11, 2012 at 11:43 AM

I would love to have clean water for my family!

  488. Mindy

    May 11, 2012 at 11:44 AM

We would love being able to have water that tasted good. Our city water is really bad, even sometimes we are told you need to boil it first. My aunt has a Berkley, and it is wonderful! I’ve been wanting one for a while!

  489. Francie

    May 11, 2012 at 11:55 AM

What excites me the most about it would be that it’s better than other filters. And I’d have enough water to cook with, too.

  490. Pamela Winchell

    May 11, 2012 at 12:12 PM

What excites me most? Being prepared, having a secure source of clean water, and keeping my family healthy!

What a generous givaway! I would LOVE to try a Berkey! Been battling many health issues and hormone imbalances – I wish more people understood the effects of EVERYTHING we put into our bodies. Especially the stuff we can’t see and don’t know about it. Good clean water is fundemental to good health! Thank you for this offer:)

  495. Amy

    May 11, 2012 at 1:28 PM

We have a standard water filter pitcher that we use religiously (and refill too many times a day to count), despite knowing it doesn’t do everything we want or need. As you stated in the article, it’s what we have. A wonderful product like the Berkey would be a enormous blessing for my family. With more and more contaminants being found in our water and food supplies, we have to do everything possible to keep our families healthy. The knowledge of clean, pure, water being available would be a wonderful step in that direction.

  496. jeff

    May 11, 2012 at 1:43 PM

Clean water! It would help my wife with her health challenges

  497. Stacy

    May 11, 2012 at 2:19 PM

Large quantities of clean water is what excite me most about this filter system! We have a very small filter in our house that has to be replaced a lot. This would be a huge blessing!

  498. jeannie

    May 11, 2012 at 2:24 PM

Peace of mind. I have concerns about the current water filter I am using,(It attaches under the sink and the filters leave a lot to be desired) and find after research the Berkley would handle these concerns, I also like that it does this without electricity. Yeah for clean water. Thank you for the opportunity Bulk Herb Store, Berkley and Andrea.

  499. DIANA

    May 11, 2012 at 3:18 PM

With Berkley filter system, you could drink river water, say if the world goes into survival mode. Nothing to install at the sink.

  500. laura motz

    May 11, 2012 at 4:25 PM

our water is horrible. it makes my childrens skin peel off, hair dry out, dishes look aweful with a nasty film eats pipes and washers (in the spigot). tried to get a purification system was told they wont work in my area it destroys their equiptment. I smell bleach when I run water and it scares me.

  501. Audrey

    May 11, 2012 at 5:08 PM

We go to the store and get our 5 gallon bottles refilled.
I am sure that water is nothing more than glorified tap
Water. This would be so much healthier and we wouldn’t
Have to go anywhere to get it 🙂

  507. Caitlin Jacobs

    May 11, 2012 at 7:35 PM

My family drinks a lot of water and also uses a lot to make tea and cook with. A Berkley would be a great addition to out kitchen. I can’t drink the water from the tap or refridgerator because of the chemicals and taste, and I can’t bring myself to but bottled water, so I end up not drinking as much water as I need to. The Berkley would help me reach my RDI of water!!

  508. elysse

    May 11, 2012 at 7:36 PM

I have been wanting a Berkey for some time to provide safe water for my family.

  509. Kellie

    May 11, 2012 at 8:28 PM

Being able to filter out all the crud from our water would be great! My teenage daughter has bad spots on her teeth from flouride. I worry about my 2 younger boys having the same problem.

  510. Stephanie

    May 11, 2012 at 11:13 PM

I’m getting married in a few months, and it’s really important to me to start off our new life making the right choices about our health. Pure, clean water is a great way to do that!

  511. Jenn

    May 11, 2012 at 11:27 PM

I have been practically losing sleep about what is in our drinking water. We have a regular filter in our fridge, but I am not sure how reliable it really is. We have 4 kids and I want to make sure they aren’t getting all those toxins when they drink. I have been considering reverse osmosis but that is sooooo expensive. I will certainly be looking into the Berkey.

  512. Rachel @ The Henway

    May 12, 2012 at 6:55 AM

I hate our well water. It smells and leaves me with an upset stomach. Filtration pitchers just dont cut it, and I’m tired of buying jugs of water! I’d love to try this system out!!!!

No more worrying about the water source at our house.. 🙂

  514. Abigail Walsh

    May 12, 2012 at 7:26 AM

I would have to say having actual CLEAN water. Where I live the level of chemicals in the water make a glass of water give you cotton mouth so I’ve resorted to bottled water.

  515. Linda S.

    May 12, 2012 at 7:54 AM

I really really need to have water free of fluoride and other toxins for health reasons. This filter is one of the only products that will do this!

  516. Heather

    May 12, 2012 at 8:25 AM

We’re currently going through a nutritional healing process ~ switching to traditional foods and working to add more probiotic foods into our lives. This would help so much, since city water isn’t the best for making ferments. 🙂

My new year’s resolution was to drink more water because I really don’t get enough. I have been doing better, but it’s hard because my city’s water isn’t the best tasting. I use a Brita filter, but they really aren’t very economical, and honestly, I don’t know how well they work. I would love to have a system like this that would allow me to drink lots of yummy water – and to ensure that my kitties drink yummy water too!

I have been wanting to get a filter of some type, just not sure which one. There are rusty pipes in this house we are renting so we really need some type of filter. I will be keeping eyes on winning this filter, since I don’t have the money right now to buy a filter of my own and then I won’t have to buy bottled water anymore.

I am fascinated by this product and the special filters, because all of the research I have done about removing fluoride says it’s not possible with out reverse osmosis. I am frankly tired of lugging home jugs of water every week and would love an in-home system. We don’t have room under our sink to put in a RO system of our own, so I have been resolve to getting RO from my local health food store. Great giveaway!

We have a well, and the pump is failing. That stirs up the bottom dirt, consequently causing our water to be impure for a number of days each time the pump fails. A Berkey would assure us that we were drinking clean water. It would be a thrilling thing to win!

The Berkey is much needed in our home!!! We are currently in an area of the U.S. where they are fracking for natural gas. It has killed our water quality. We also have town water were they put flouride in the water. Happy Mother’s Day:)

I am so excited about this giveaway! Many years ago, when I had well water, I was using a tap filtration system to remove the impurities and improve taste, and even starting using a delivery system; however, I wasn’t using it for all the right reasons. Like everyone else, I was conditioned to believe that fluoride was essential to dental health. What a fool I was! In fact, for many years after that I continued to follow the masses (I was a sheeple) with the belief about this poison, and didn’t use a filter with my tap water. To make matters even worse, we were absorbing more fluoride by brushing our teeth with toothpaste that contained it. I couldn’t come up with a guess if I tried about how much we had consumed over the years. Honestly, with all the scientific proof out there about the damaging affects of fluoride, I cannot believe this chemical is still allowed in toothpaste, especially brands marketed to children. Even the ADA is pushing it, claiming it is necessary for us and our children. But as I have been improving my dietary intake through better food choices and consuming organics, resulting in a net weight loss of nearly 100 pounds in just over a year, not to mention feeling better than I have in over 20 years, I have received my wake-up call about fluoride. I now use toothpaste without it, and have been diligently trying to avoid tap water at all cost. I could really use this Berkey system. It definitely seems to be the best out there, and most cost-effective with return on investment as well. Thank you for the opportunity to be a part of this giveaway. Here’s to good health for us all!!! 😀

The most exciting thing is getting rid of Fluoride, I have a 2 year old and I try and avoid it at all cost. I use a water filter now on my faucet as I haven’t bought bottled water in years. But to get rid of the fluoride would just be great!!

  596. Becky

    May 13, 2012 at 7:47 PM

$300 for a system that will run without electricity AND remove all the industrial nasties sounds like a steal. We’re using a cheap Brita on questionable city water at the moment. Only saving grace is we’re so far out in the boonies, I doubt the “city” does much during the treatment process!

  597. Pam

    May 13, 2012 at 7:51 PM

This is an awesome give-away! I’m also wary of the “extras” in town water…when I lived at my parents, it didn’t matter, b/c they only had well water (although I’m sure there are some extra minerals in there as well, but we didn’t get sick from it). I really miss fresh well water….should put that on my wish list! lol Thanks for a chance to win!

  598. Elaine Douglas

    May 13, 2012 at 7:51 PM

  604. Nadia

    May 13, 2012 at 8:17 PM

I’d love to own one of these for the simple fact that If I have to drink tap water, I don’t drink water at all. It’s terrible…my mom worked for Edmontons water and sanitation dept yrs ago and she tells me that often the water isn’t safe to drink but they don’t tell us…no duh since it tastes so bad! Lol. We drink culligan but it would be amazing not to have to lug the darn bottles of water home..mixed with the fact that home depot never has them in stock.

  605. Tanis

    May 13, 2012 at 8:18 PM

The thought of having such a great water purification/filtration system would make me feel so much better about all of the water my husband and I drink! Brita filters only do so much for LA City water.

  606. Joyce St John

    May 13, 2012 at 8:20 PM

This looks like it would be very easy to use. I like that it holds 2.75 gals of water. I drink more water if I have good water.

  607. Sharon C.

    May 13, 2012 at 8:23 PM

I would have to say that it would save money in the long run. Our tap water is horrible, so we must buy our water.

I would love to have a Berkey for my family’s health! I am working through mercury toxicity and my husband is trying to keep cancer at bay since he’s lost 3 of his immediate family members to the disease. We know having clean, pure water helps flush toxins out of our bodies and also agree with you that the Berkey is the best filter for the job!

I would love to have a water purification source that will work even during an emergency. I have two rain barrels and it rains here frequently, so to have a way to purify water if necessary would be awesome! We also camp a lot, and make roadtrips. I could see this getting a lot of use in our family.
