Homemade Chocolate Chews :: Pure, Raw Plant-Based Energy

This weekend, I was more-than-usual, super busy in the kitchen!

I’ve been inching toward the low end on several of the homemade condiments and staples that I typically keep readily available.

And then I was reminded of my recipe for Chocolate Chews!

They had to be made!

These Chocolate Chews are 100% pure, raw plant-based energy and nutrition.

I love having one a few hours before — or a little after — I go hiking, practice yoga, or do any type of strenuous exercise. They are perfect to wrap up for those grab-n-go mornings. They satisfy my sweet chocolate cravings.

They’re pretty much the yummiest things ever!

Ingredients
*Use organic ingredients whenever possible. I have linked to examples of products I purchase and use in my home.

  • 1 cup medjool dates
  • 1 1/4 cup hemp seeds (these are my favorite organic hemp seeds)
  • 1/2 cup coconut oil (this is absolutely, hands-down the best coconut oil EVER)
  • 1/2 cup tahini
  • 1 cup fair trade cacao powder
  • 1 cup unsweetened shredded coconut

Method

  1. In a food processor, add all ingredients.
  2. Mix until well combined, 1-2 minutes.
  3. Transfer mixture to a 8×8 glass dish and press down using a spatula.
  4. Refrigerate for 4 hours to allow mixture to firm up.
  5. Cut into bars, size suitable for your needs.
  6. Wrap individual bars in unbleached parchment paper or plastic wrap. Store in refrigerator. Will keep for 2-3 weeks — if they last that long.

Enjoy!

If you want to substitute hemp seeds, do you have any ideas of good substitutions? What if you want to avoid hemp because of thyroid issues? I read that hemp seeds are something to avoid. I always thought they were healthy for you and so I would use hemp protein powder in my smoothies. I HATE the taste of hemp so I have to hide it in something like smoothies. But now I am concerned.

    Thanks.

Hi Rebecca! I’d use either ground raw almonds or raw cashews:)

Rebecca, I just did some searching on this, as both my daughters have thyroid issues, and one has a medical marijuana card for pain….The results I got, and the articles I read ALL indicated that although more research is required, cannabis actually HELPS those with thyroid issues.
      Here is one article:
      http://www.medicann.com/conditions-and-diseases/medical-cannabis-and-the-thyroid-gland/
      Maybe you misunderstood the connection?
Also, hemp seeds are not the same as marijuana, commonly known as cannabis.

I use sesame seeds in my chocolate when hemp seeds aren’t available. Can’t wait to try this recipe:)

I really want to try these…but not a tahini fan. Think I could substitute with almond butter?

Thanks Andrea! I am always looking for new snack ideas for our family! How well would this hold up outside of the fridge (say in packed in a lunchbox or taken on a trip), would it still stay in tact? Thanks you so much for posting!

You’re very welcome Kathy! And they really hold up with excellence outside of the refrigerator. They may become a little sticky, but not bad at all.

I have been wondering if Medjool dates are different / better than other dates that are more familiar to me.
