I love this time of year! Gardens are giving their bounty. Children are returning to school. The Autumn Equinox is fast approaching.

And as the season of harvest swings into full gear — now is the time to put our affairs in order.

It is that time of the year to take pause, evaluate what we are working toward and to begin “separating the wheat from the chaff.”

In other words, to not allow ourselves to be distracted by daily pettiness.

As all of nature gathers for itself the last gifts of the season, the days begin to shorten, and the leaves on the trees begin to change their color…it is time for us to:

  • become more efficient
  • work or study hard
  • begin harvesting our rewards

What is worth harvesting?

Now is the time when we are able to choose between what things or actions in our lives are worth keeping or tossing aside.

Our ability and willingness to

be resourceful, adapt, and create

plays a key role during this season of

change, preparation, and bounty.

Working with Our Hands

I love the harvest season! (Wait…did I already say that?)

Well, I do!!!

Perhaps it’s because I absolutely enjoy working with my hands.

Creating beautiful and practical goods = joy and peace to my soul

Instinctually, I am drawn to caregiving, homemaking, herbalism, and the art of healing.

Yet it is during these months of Autumn that I feel myself drawn even more so toward expressing my artistic and crafty side by learning a new skill.

Tips for Creating Beauty and Practical Handcrafted Goods

This year I am already thinking ahead toward Thanksgiving, Christmas, and all of the other holidays that call for gift-giving.

And as I put my affairs in order — in preparation for the coming months —

…a priority is to create beautiful and practical handcrafted goods.

And I’m learning new skills by taking a few online classes with Craftsy!

Craftsy is an online community of 1.5 million makers just like us! And they describe themselves by saying:

We know that anything we want to create is in our hands. No matter our craft of choice, from quilting, to knitting, to sewing, to cake decorating, and more, together we take our skills to new heights alongside the world’s best instructors. We inspire and support each other with helpful tips and positive feedback along the way. We pour our hearts and souls into our projects and take pride in what we make.

We believe in providing the best education. We believe in handmade. We believe in you.

Join us to begin your crafting adventure!

Craftsy offers:

  • A wide selection of online crafting classes from the best instructors from around the world.
  • The ability to watch your classes from anywhere, from any device with an internet connection.
  • Unlimited access…take your classes anytime you want, as many times as you want. Your access never expires.

Classes include — but are not limited to — topics such as:

  • Cake Decorating
  • Crocheting
  • Embroidery
  • Fine Art
  • Food & Cooking
  • Home & Garden
  • Jewelry Making
  • Knitting
  • Paper Crafts
  • Photography
  • Quilting
  • Sewing
  • Spinning
  • Weaving

Each of the classes listed above are clickable links that will take you directly to the Craftsy class selection for that particular topic! Please note: These are affiliate links…all that means is that I get a small portion of the percentage of sales if you purchase a class. And I can’t thank you enough for your support!

There are classes for the beginner, intermediate, and advanced learner.

They even offer free classes!

Like this FREE sewing class…Bag-Making Basics: Reversible Tote & Zipper Pouch…where you will learn how to make two cute bags with Kristin Link of Sew,Mama,Sew!

I’m so excited to have found such a wonderful resource.

Crochet rugs.
Knitted scarves, mittens, and hats.
Homemade artisan cheese.
Photo memory books.
And maybe a pair of earnings!

Handcrafted goods will be the gifts of the season!

What skills are you looking forward to learning?

I recently signed up for a tatting class and for a hairpin lace class over on Craftsy. I love that I can access it anytime that I want.

I crochet and love making things for friends. The latest is a wedding shower gift for a young lady. Baby booties were my obsession over the summer. College and NFL colors were most prominent.
Tablet cases have been an easy hooking project also.

In Aus we are moving into the warmer months. I am looking at crocheting some placemats and trivets following some vintage patterns where I will use stitches I haven’t used before. Will be interesting.

I am going to be signing up for a class in the new year! I can’t wait! I love learning new skills. I have learned how to grind my own flour, not use a microwave, can meat and so many other useful crafts!

This year I have crocheted a few dishcloths, sewn a quilted centerpiece, and made several beaded bracelets for people. Most of my gifts are handmade.
