Once you’ve had homemade ketchup you’ll never go back to that sugar-laden, overly-processed stuff they sell at the store. And with this super quick and easy recipe, anyone can make their own!

Make Your Own: Homemade Ketchup

Gather the Ingredients

-1-6 ounce can tomato paste
-1/4 medium onion
-1 clove garlic
-1 Tbsp honey (Don’t have honey? No worries, any sweetener will do!)
-3/4 tsp salt
-1/2 tsp cumin
-1/4 tsp dry mustard
-1/4 tsp cinnamon
-pinch of cloves
-pinch of allspice
-cayenne pepper to taste
-2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar

Make Your Own: Homemade Ketchup

Prepare

For easy clean-up, I add all of the ingredients to a wide-mouth glass canning jar and mix with a stick blender. Slowly add water (approximately 1/4-1/2 cup) to mixture while blending until desired consistency is reached.

Make Your Own: Homemade Ketchup

Enjoy

Store in covered jar in the refrigerator. Should stay fresh for 7-10 days.

I make homemade ketchup from fresh tomatoes to avoid the BPA-lined can. My recipe is delicious but turns out brown instead of bright red like yours: http://myplasticfreelife.com/2011/12/mark-ps-plastic-free-homemade-tomato-ketchup/

Does your ketchup from fresh ingredients turn brown?

You know…I add a little lemon juice and it really helps to keep it bright:) Your recipe looks super yummy:) Thank you for sharing the link!

Hmm… I wonder why lemon juice works better than vinegar. They are both acid, right? Does citrus have something that vinegar doesn’t?

          Citric acid?

I’ll bet that’s it. I’ll try it next time and see if it helps. Thanks!

Hi! Not sure how I stumbled on your blog, but I’m really enjoying your posts. We’ve made our own ketchup for 2 years now and my boys hate it when I run out and have to buy a bottle from the store. They just don’t like the taste of it. I generally make about 20 jars during the summer months and can it. Yum!

That’s so awesome Wendy! I love it when our children develop a taste for real food:)

This looks awesome! My husband is excited to try making this. I need to find a recipe book for condiments! I would love to make this from fresh tomatoes this summer and can it too, what a wonderful idea!!

I’m glad I’m not the only one who still uses canned tomato items……I know everyone and their brother is scared of BPA lining, but I just gotta tell you – a can here and there isn’t going to kill anyone. Amen.

Great post on homemade ketchup. Everything taste better with ketchup, doesn’t it?

Anyway, about BPA… you should be aware of BPA in everything you come in contact with so one can here and one can there WILL hurt you in the end. BPA is everywhere, even in paper money you touch. So if you can avoid it, you should. I buy tomato paste in tubes and not in cans. And when I make ketchup, I do try to use fresh tomatoes and not paste. I simmer the ketchup too and cool it. I have to post the recipe one of these days.

But here is my post about BPA.

        Thanks for the post Andrea!

Thank you so much for this recipe. I was just having a think about what else I could make from scratch that I am currently having to buy.

I can’t thank you enough for this little recipe! We recently found out that one of our boys is diabetic and ketchup used to be one of his food groups (hello?) that he has had to give up. Thanks so much. XO, Steph.

Steph, Why did your son have to give up ketchup? Is this something your doctor required? My DS10 has had Type 1 diabetes for 5 years. He eats everything a healthy, normal 10-year-old eats. Everything in moderation.

      • Steph.

        January 18, 2012 at 2:55 PM

Hi Happy Hen! 🙂 No, he is 18 and Type 2. We are trying to avoid medication by a complete dietary change and so far it is helping tremendously. I have always prided myself on the lack of junk food in the house, but he had this habit of eating too many carbs and putting commercial ketchup all over everything….it has high fructose corn syrup in it which is just plain EVIL. If you have any other ideas for me I would love to hear them. I plan to do a blog post soon about my revamped pantry! I am a working mom, but I have cut down on committments so that I can dedicate more time to home cooking and it is paying off, thankfully. I want him to have good habits before he leaves the nest. XO

You should look up the GAPS diet. You can heal him from type 2 with it. The long name is Gut and Psychology Syndrome by Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride. 🙂

Love this! How does the taste compare to good ol’ Heinz 57?

Better, I’m sure–but less sweet? Unexpectedly tangy?

This looks super easy!! Is there a way to can it and make it in bulk?

    • Andrea

      January 18, 2012 at 1:55 PM

Yes you can can it:) Simply double, triple, or whatever-size the recipe and can it using the water-bath method!

    • Andrea

      January 18, 2012 at 1:58 PM

Absolutely! Just increase the ingredients proportionally. Great idea!

Hi Andrea ~ I love your site!. Just started receiving the daily emails in the past two weeks and love the recipes you share. However, trying to print them takes up TONS of paper. Is there any way they can be condensed without all the pics so they will print or save in a smaller area? I would love to save them in a pdf format so I don’t have to get on the internet to view them (or print them on 12 pages) see them when I want to make them.

      January 19, 2012 at 10:36 AM

Brilliant idea Patty! I will create a pdf download for you! Thank you very much for the suggestion:)

    Can you freeze Ketchup?

  14. Sarah

    January 3, 2014 at 6:00 AM

    One word – Yum!
I love this (just made it & eating it straight) and I have never liked the store bought stuff, though my garlic clove might have been a little on the large side.
And bonus…you can use it as a marinara sauce if you somehow haven’t used it up in the 7 – 10 day shelf life.
