  13. I love this site/blog! I recently found a Great Recipe for a homemade salve for itching including axcema, insect bites and I am sure the list goes on! I began this search looking for something to help my beagle/X with his hot spots. When he gets warm, he has to stick his paws in his water dish to cool off. Then he began getting these small itchy sores(which looked like ant bites but some would get bigger and fester. Took him to the vet and she put him on prednisone ( steroid with some other drug in it). I finally looked on the Internet and found a recipe for plantain salve. After I looked up a picture of it, I realized that was the weed growing on my front lawn!
    1. Here goes…I pulled out the weed by the roots and cut the
    off the end roots
    2. Washed the leaves well
    3. Dried it a bit, just to get most of the excess water off
    4. I put it in my food processor and chopped it very fine
    5. Take a half cup of olive oil, put it in a pot and just simmer on very low heat
    6. To thicken, I didn’t have any bees wax, so I grated up about a cup of bees wax…but you can add as much as you want depending how thick you want it…if you just want it oily, you could skip this step altogether
    7. I used a j-cloth to stain the mixture into a bowl and after rinsing the chunks of leaves out of the pot and returned the strained mixture to low heat.
    8. This is where you just add an essential oil to improve on the smell of the ointment. The site I was on suggested peppermint, I had none so I added clove oil since it already has properties in it to help with infections.
    9. I strained it a second time with the J-cloth to remove the remaining chunks of the plantain. I am somewhat of a pack-rat so had many cosmetic jars so I was able to give some to my family members and I keep the one for the dogs separate from humans. I tried to add a pic of the plantain, but if you search it and click on images, you will see it. This stuff can be found anywhere! What impressed me the most about this was that it is totally edible! I did not want to put it on the dog or the cat unless it was because they are guaranteed to lick it. There are different varieties of this weed so you may have the skinny leaf or the rounded oval one….both work the same.
    I made this on Sunday, applied it to the dog that day. Today is Wednesday and ALL his spots are gone! We had a family get together that day and I gave one to my niece who has really bad axcema. She loved it and it stopped the itch right away.
    I apologize if you have this posted already, but there are so many posts, I did not get a chance to read them all.
    Something like this is priceless to me! Easy, quick, safe, and effective….you can’t beat that!

  18. I want to thank you again for that plantain salve recipe. Within 2 days Marlee’s (my dog) hot spots were all cleared up! It beats the pills the Vet. Put him on that just knock him out. I tried something else with the plantain since he has the spots all over and the oily coat was becoming a problem.

    I found a recipe on line for fleas (to prevent them). It is just 6 lemons halved, put in a pot with a quart of water and simmer them for about half an hour. Let it cool, squeeze the lemons into the mixture and strain and then you just spray it on your dog.

    I took it a little further and added plantain, a little lavender ( just to make it smell better). I keep it in the fridge in a spray bottle. Spray them down once a week. It will help prevent fleas, cool them down and help the hot spots. They also smell nice!
    I also read that if you take lemon oil and put a drop on the dog’s collar, it will aid in preventing fleas.
    I have used the plantain salve on myself for my excema and the odd bug bite and it takes the itch away quickly.
